Nowadays we are surrounded by an endless number of distractions that make it difficult for us to concentrate, new technologies, stress, pressure… make our minds get blocked and we are not clear about how to do things, because we do not have time to think clearly or because we are oversaturated with so much information. The human brain can store an incredible amount of knowledge, but due to these distractions we are not able to take advantage of its capacity, we need calmness to be able to work properly and this is why relaxation is so important in education. Moreover, if we show them the way to be relaxed when working, we are working on the competence of “learning to learn”, so students can be more aware of their decisions and therefore more responsible for their educational process and personal growth.

In vocational training we find students who, in addition to facing theoretical and practical concepts in a semi-controlled environment, such as the educational centre, have to face practical work experience in the real world, where they must apply their knowledge and at the same time face labour relations, so that conflict resolution and the management of their emotions are areas that must be worked on for the students’ success. Educational institutions are faced with the need to adapt to a changing labour market, providing students with new skills to stand out in an increasingly competitive market, hence the importance of breathing techniques as a relaxation technique.

Breathing techniques (which are a relaxation technique) are a tool for reducing stress as they seek to control the body’s automatic responses by indirect means. Although breathing control is usually automatic, it is possible to voluntarily modify both the breathing pattern and the rhythm and depth of each inspiration-expiration, in such a way that, if the individual is able to establish correct breathing habits, the percentage of oxygen in the blood is higher and feelings of anxiety decrease, due to the action of the different breathing patterns on the autonomic nervous system. Consequently, correct breathing can be an important stress management strategy.
