General overview of how to implement it
The origin of the gymkhanas goes back to India where the British army used them to keep the cavalry in shape and improve their horsemanship skills. Today we know that gymkhanas have evolved so much that it is adaptable to any situation, both playful and, in this case, pedagogical.
The fact of including game-based resources as part of the circuit makes gymkhana the perfect resource to capture the motivation and attention of students.
In this case, we present a gymkhana with 5 resources based on the game, which are detailed below:
- Anagrams: An anagram is the word resulting from transposing the order of the letters of another word. In this case, the student must properly order the words contained in the anagram.
- True and false baskets: at this point different resources can be used, but one that students usually like a lot is to use a ball that they have to shoot into two baskets, one that refers to a true answer and another that makes reference to a false answer, as if it were basketball.
- Match concepts: regarding this activity, it can also be approached in different ways. A very simple one is to place images or material / instruments, with their respective names, in a disordered way, in which the student has to match the concepts properly.
- Order procedures: In this case, the student must order the steps of a certain procedure so that they are in the correct order.
- Final quiz: the final activity will be to solve a series of questions, in test format, for example.
Since the activities that gymkhana can contain are so varied, the way to implement it will also be very different. It is very important that students know in advance the development of the different tests that make up the gymkhana, for example, if we have previously worked in the classroom on how to create anagrams.
Once the student knows all the activities, all the material related to the different tests will be prepared and a day will be scheduled for their completion.
To prevent students from knowing the content of the test in advance, the group will be located in one classroom and the gymkhana will take place in another classroom, where students will go one by one or in groups, depending on how the test is designed. exercise.
During development, the teacher will evaluate each of the activities (whether the result is correct or not), as well as timing and assessing teamwork if the activity is being carried out in a group.
It is also recommended that at the end of the realisation, a reflection is carried out with the group of students on how they have felt and what they have learned during it.
