For which purposes it is used

Student-generated questions are an excellent technique to ensure that learners understand what has been taught to them and to motivate them to spend time doing so. The time they will spend composing questions is time spent thinking about the approach used, deciding which aspects were essential or deserving of additional discussion, and analyzing what questions the approach left them with. Furthermore, it is a method that promotes learners’ creativity since they learn how to design effective questions, which is something that every writing class (and college in general) should ask of them. It’s a very simple task for learners to perform well on if they focused throughout the delivery time, and for teachers to grade, so it’s a win-win situation.

Furthermore, it may aid in identifying patterns or flaws in learner thinking and can serve as a great foundation for effective discussion questions. This active participation of students also provides them the impression that they are contributing to the creation of the class by making them feel more involved and their views more respected. This is particularly important since the quietest students are often the ones that submit the most insightful questions.
