The first thing to decide when we want to incorporate this technique into the classroom is to think about the time and space resources we have, because it will depend on this aspect which activities, in addition to the breathing techniques, we can incorporate to achieve greater relaxation in the students. This example was proposed by IES Javier García Téllez .
The steps to follow in the incorporation of this technique in a vehicle maintenance class were:
- First: to inform the students about the timetable dedicated to breathing techniques. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, students had their breathing session for 10 minutes at 11:30 (before the start of the fourth class hour). And 15 minutes on Thursday during the tutoring hour.
- Second: Before starting, the students had to sit in a comfortable position and were encouraged to stretch their necks, arms and legs a little before the session began.
- Third: students were encouraged to close their eyes before starting the breathing session in order to avoid visual stimuli and thus foster an atmosphere of calm and relaxation.
- Fourth: performing the breathing technique that took place that week. During the first weeks the 5 different techniques were taught and at the end of the course each student chose which one they wanted to do, although at the beginning it is recommended that everyone does the same one to avoid being distracted by the breathing of their classmates.
- Fifth: in those sessions where there was time left (depending on the experience, time was gained), music was played to encourage students to relax and in the tutoring session, the time after the session was used for students to talk about the week’s conflicts, fostering a climate of intimacy and tranquillity that improves the classroom climate and relationships.
