Where does it come from

SWOT analysis was established in the 1960s at the Stanford Research Institute by a management consultant named Albert Humphrey. Corporate planning had previously met with limited success.  Fortune 500 organizations required a method for developing executable and reasonable long-term planning.  Humphrey and his research team developed the SWOT analysis to instill accountability and objectivity into the planning process, and it has remained popular since.

Albert Humphrey advocated for doing SWOT analysis on a variety of specific factors, including products, processes, customers, distribution, financing, and administration.  Since its inception, SWOT analysis has increased in popularity.
