What is this technique about

Prototyping is a tool that is part of the learning process, it is a process of discovery. Prototyping is a methodology based on shaping an innovation proposal to solve a problem or achieve a specific objective. Its origin is to be found in the scientific method in which, faced with a hypothesis, several solutions are proposed, choosing the most appropriate, experimenting until the final product is achieved. The basis is trial and error, taking advantage of successes and correcting errors, which means turning when the result is not as expected.

The student will be able to formulate and evaluate a case with innovative criteria, reflecting his/her enterprising profile.

It is a technique based on the construction of knowledge in a practical way. It could be said that it gives an answer to a hypothesis raised in a theoretical way through testing with reality.

It takes place in the generation phase, after having carried out the research and definition of the pattern, and it also extends to the evaluation phase. It is a recurrent  process  that allows the pattern  to be evaluated and repeated  until a proposal that meets the objectives of the project is reached and, once validated, thanks to the feedback received from the clients,  it will lead to the development and execution phases of the project.

Advantages:

  •  moving from the abstract to the concrete
  • facilitating communication and teamwork, collaborative work and the involvement of everyone in the design process by visualising the status of the proposals.
  • evaluating the proposal through customer feedback and thus be able to introduce improvements until the final version is reached.
  • Controlling the costs in the development phase by detecting errors and developing improvements before moving on to the development phase

Disadvantages:

  • it is necessary to make objective decisions about iterations and what to do without, without “falling in love with the idea”.
  • a prototype could be indefinitely repeated, so it is necessary to establish the time and resources available for prototyping.
  •  Possibility of leadership imbalance (being based on collaborative work).
