What is this technique about
This eye-catching strategy introduces students to six different ways of thinking and encourages them to approach a problem from six different angles, working as a mental metaphor. Each of the Six Thinking Hats has a different color, and each color represents a different perspective on an issue, a different mode of thought.
WHITE HAT | FACTS: Discuss the facts and other information about the problem in a neutral and objective way. |
BLACK HAT | CAUTIONS: It’s the pessimistic and judgmental one, playing the devil’s advocate role. Present negative aspects, or worst case scenarios, regarding the situation. |
RED HAT | FEELINGS: Express gut feeling toward the matter and represent the intuitive view. It shares emotions. |
YELLOW HAT | BENEFITS: It’s the optimistic one, covering the hopes. Consider positives, or advantages, of the situation. Why something will work and why it will offer benefits. |
GREEN HAT | CREATIVITY: Focus on different alternatives and new ideas. |
BLUE HAT | PROCESS: it is the organizational hat, which focuses on control and progression (assessment). Sum up all that is learned. “Putting on my blue hat, I think we should do some greener hat thinking at this point.” |
