Tips & Tricks

  • A mind map can have many first-level associations, but the mind can only fully understand about 7 at a time.
  • Keep the topic labels as brief as possible, no more than one word – or, better yet, a single image. A single word/image per connection allows for greater flexibility, creativity, and clarity.
  • Use curves. In fact, the brain prefers curves rather than straight lines, because this way they feel more natural.
  • Utilize a wide variety of colors, illustrations, and symbols. Keep your mind as visual as possible.
  • Vary the font size, color, and alignment of the text. Vary the line thickness and length. Utilize as many visual cues as possible to draw attention to critical points.
